The corrective shoeing process at the Peeps Foundation…

Here at the Peeps Foundation, all of our minis’ and dwarves’ feet are cared for and maintained by our team in-house. When a new mini arrives at the Peeps Foundation, we follow these steps:

Step 1: We trim the hoof down as short as possible, starting with the heel and moving to the toe.

Step 2: Next we assess whether the hoof needs a Polyflex corrective shoes, glue extension, or series of aggressive trims.

Step 3: If shoes are needed we place the foot on the desired area of the shoe at the right angle to maximize the support that the leg needs in order to straighten.

For our team at the Peeps Foundation, we’re able to see a difference in the minis walk and leg structure within the first few hours of their initial shoeing session. Sometimes they can be sore because changing the leg structure to a more correct position puts pressure on the ligaments that have been pulled the wrong direction thus far. Following the first session, our team trims and readjusts the shoes every two weeks to ensure maximum comfort for the minis as they endure this transformative process. In total it can take about a year and a half to go from a full set of shoes to nothing.

Dunkin came to the Peeps Foundation with incorrect shoeing (left), which caused his legs to be even more misshaped. The pictures on the right show his development with our shoes and finally barefoot after 6 months.
